TOTNES MARKET ATTRACTS ATTENTION FROM NEAR AND
FAR:
Considering how close the first market of the New Year fell after the
Xmas & New Year holidays (just 2 weeks), the market still managed to attract
an enthusiastic crowd of food lovers, many wanting to revitalise their taste
buds! But, not only did it pull people from all around our region, it also
drew the attention of the media. Higher Fingle Farm (who trade on the market
under the Civic Hall) brought a film crew with them from Westcountry TV. The
crew were filming a story about Rona’s goat herd, and finding out that we
had other goat products on the market, went on to film pieces with
Norsworthy Goats Cheese, Caprine Capers goats milk chocolates and feasted on
Fancy That’s Caribbean goat curry.
It was also nice to welcome the Western Morning News to our first market of
the year. Fine weather meant lots of great pics of the market in action
could be taken and their reporter Gillian Adams was out and about gathering
feedback from the market’s loyal punters. All this to be featured in a
future edition of Devon Homes & Living magazine.
And the market also went global; a South Korean film crew were also covering
the market, accompanied with one of their country’s celebrity chefs, a
beautiful Asian girl, who they introduced as the ‘South Korean Jamie
Oliver’. Believe me, Jamie Oliver isn’t that pretty!
ALSO, STILL ON THE SUBJECT OF THE PRESS:
An article in ‘The Times’ travel section (Saturday 17th December,
2011) extolling the virtues of Totnes as an ideal weekend getaway, featured
the TGFS market. Ron Barter of Brimblecombe’s Cider (our very own ‘Santa’
lookalike) got a very favourable mention and so did the Morris Dancers of
Harberton. But what capped it all was the articles closing quote about the
TGFS market: ‘The utopian amount of free-range food available on the Totnes
Good Food Sunday market makes the farmers’ markets in most towns look like
roadside burger vans’. What more can you say!
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER:
The Cockleshell Deli Shellfish Bar will finally be up and running at
the next market on Sunday 19th Feb. Tim King, who runs Cockleshell with his
lovely wife Maria, was hoping to get this new branch of his business off the
ground by November last. However, this didn’t prove feasible and not wanting
to do things by half, delayed the really fishy side of his business till the
start of the New Year. For our first market in January, Tim got the ball
rolling, introducing some really great ’fresh as a daisy’ fish and mussels
to his stall - which were very well received. And now, as we slip slowly
towards the warmer days of spring, the Cockleshell Deli is going to start
building up their new shellfish bar. Scallops and mussels ‘alive alive oh’
will be available as will other things in shells too, plus, on the day of
the market, Tim will be cooking fresh crab to order.
NEW TRADERS TO LOOK OUT FOR:
Brixham Gourmet Food - Excellent fresh Spanish tapas
cooked up in an instant by Peter. Come an introduce yourself to him and try
his recommendations. Find him at the front of the market - the green & white
stall.
Italian Food Heroes - Matteo Lamaro, our very own Italian
food hero joined the market at the end of last year, bringing a range oak
roasted fresh coffee with him, plus his family’s range of Italian biscuits.
Slowly, over the course of the next few months, Matteo will be adding more
and more authentic Italian foods to his stall.
MySpice UK - Freshly ground in the South Hams, a new
company importing, grinding and packing the finest spices available. All
available from Duncan Kenny in stylish clip top jars or refill packs. These
spices have not been sitting on shelves for months or even years!
....and Hazel Strange's exhibition at Birdwood
House Gallery next to the market 19th Feb from 10:30am
"This is my first solo exhibition since moving to
Devon. In those two and a half years I’ve been absorbing my new
surroundings, walking the paths and fields in a variety of weather and
becoming increasingly affected by the landscape.
My recent paintings come out of this new, but ancient, landscape; a
regeneration of ideas. Working in traditional oils, but also utilising new
media, digital photography and photoshop, my paintings capture a specific
moment, here for a few seconds and then gone"
